Lo Shu Grid Chart and Arrows Analysis
Plot a client's Lo Shu grid from the date of birth, see every complete and missing line at a glance, and move straight into planes, repeats, remedial guidance and the Kua number.
The Lo Shu grid is one of the fastest ways to show a client the shape of their date of birth. It is also one of the easiest charts to plot wrongly when you are working quickly. NumberTeller's Lo Shu grid software plots the 3×3 square, checks every line and lists missing and repeated numbers, so you can spend the consultation reading rather than counting.

The practitioner problem
A Lo Shu reading looks simple on paper: nine boxes, a few digits, some patterns. In a busy week, though, small slips creep in.
A year digit gets skipped, a zero is plotted, or a repeated 1 is written once. Each slip changes which lines are complete, and a wrong arrow leads to a wrong interpretation.
There is a second problem: convention. Some practitioners plot only the date digits; many Indian practitioners also add the driver and conductor. If you switch conventions between clients, your readings stop being comparable. Lo Shu grid software helps you apply one rule set every time.
What it does
- Lo Shu grid chart. The standard 3×3 magic square built from the full date of birth, with each digit in its fixed box and repeats shown by repetition.
- Three planes. The mental (thought) plane 4-9-2, the emotional (soul) plane 3-5-7 and the practical (physical) plane 8-1-6, read across the rows.
- Three columns. The thought column 4-3-8, the will column 9-5-1 and the action column 2-7-6.
- Two diagonals. 4-5-6, associated with determination and success, which the app labels "golden". And 2-5-8, associated with compassion and spirituality and sometimes called the Raj Yog arrow, which the app labels "silver".
- Complete and missing lines. Every row, column and diagonal is checked, so Lo Shu arrows of strength and missing arrows are shown clearly.
- Missing number analysis with remedial guidance. Missing numbers in the Lo Shu grid are listed, with traditional element-based suggestions in the written interpretation.
- Repeated number analysis. Numbers that appear more than once are flagged as over-energy, so you can discuss where a strength may tip into excess.
- Full frequency table. A count of how many times each digit from 1 to 9 appears.
- Kua number. A built-in Kua number calculator uses birth year and gender, for practitioners who combine the grid with Feng Shui.
- Feng Shui compatibility. The element and direction language in the reading fits naturally into a Feng Shui consultation.
How the Lo Shu grid software works
The method follows the traditional Lo Shu square. Every row, column and diagonal of this square adds to 15.

Plotting rules
- Write the date of birth in full as DD MM YYYY.
- Place every non-zero digit in its box. Zeros are not plotted.
- Write a repeated digit as many times as it occurs, so two 1s appear as "11".
- Leave a box empty if its digit does not occur. That number is "missing".
These are the rules used throughout the NumberTeller Learn library. If you add the driver and conductor, state that in your report.
Reading lines
Each of the eight lines (three rows, three columns, two diagonals) has three boxes. If all three are filled, the line is complete. If all three are empty, the line is missing. Partly filled lines are neither; they show a theme that is present but not fully supported.
Names for the planes and arrows vary between schools. The NumberTeller chart uses the names given above, based only on the Lo Shu layout. Choose one naming system for your reports and keep it.
Repeats and over-energy
When a digit appears more than once, traditional practice reads its qualities as amplified. Two 9s may show strong idealism; three or more can suggest it tipping into impatience. The software flags repeats so you can decide how much weight to give them.
Worked example
Our sample client is Priya Sharma, born 15 August 1990 (fictional). All figures below were checked with a short script.
Step 1: list the digits
The date is 15 08 1990. The digits are 1, 5, 0, 8, 1, 9, 9, 0. Dropping the zeros leaves 1, 5, 8, 1, 9, 9.
Step 2: plot the grid
- | 99 | -
---------------
- | 5 | -
---------------
8 | 11 | -
Step 3: frequency table
| Number | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Count | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 2 |
Missing numbers: 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7. Repeated numbers: 1 and 9, each appearing twice.
Step 4: check every line
| Line | Boxes | Filled | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mental plane | 4-9-2 | 9 | Partial |
| Emotional plane | 3-5-7 | 5 | Partial |
| Practical plane | 8-1-6 | 8, 1 | Partial |
| Thought column | 4-3-8 | 8 | Partial |
| Will column | 9-5-1 | 9, 5, 1 | Complete |
| Action column | 2-7-6 | none | Empty |
| Diagonal | 4-5-6 | 5 | Partial |
| Diagonal | 2-5-8 | 5, 8 | Partial |
Priya has one arrow of strength, the will column 9-5-1, and one missing arrow, the action column 2-7-6. In a reading, you might explore how strong intention and drive sit alongside a gap in the line associated with action and follow-through. Her repeated 1s and 9s are where over-energy discussion would begin.
The driver and conductor variation
Priya's Life Path, using this library's component method, is 15/6 (day 15 → 6; month 8; year 1990 → 1; 6 + 8 + 1 = 15 → 6). Her driver is also 6. Adding two 6s fills the bottom-right box. The 8-1-6 practical plane then becomes complete and the 2-7-6 line is no longer empty. This is why you must state your convention.
A second example
Arjun Mehta (fictional), born 14 July 1962. Digits 1, 4, 7, 1, 9, 6, 2 give 1 (×2), 2, 4, 6, 7 and 9. Missing numbers are 3, 5 and 8.
4 | 9 | 2
---------------
- | - | 7
---------------
- | 11 | 6
Two lines are complete: the mental plane 4-9-2 and the action column 2-7-6. No line is fully empty. With the centre 5 missing, neither diagonal can be complete. Arjun's Kua number, as a man born in 1962, is 2: the last two digits of the year, 62, reduce to 8, and 10 − 8 = 2. A July birth needs no solar-year adjustment.
Using it in a consultation
- Confirm the date of birth. Ask the client to check day, month and year before you plot anything.
- Show the grid first. Let the client see the filled and empty boxes before you interpret.
- Start with complete lines. Arrows of strength give the client something to recognise and build on.
- Move to missing lines and numbers. Frame them as areas to develop, not as defects.
- Discuss repeats. Use the over-energy flags to talk about balance, not as warnings to alarm.
- Add the Kua number if relevant. For a client who wants home or office guidance, the Kua number links the reading to Feng Shui directions.
- Offer supportive suggestions. Use the remedial guidance in the interpretation where it fits, and keep it simple and reversible.
- Save the chart. Saved charts let you compare the grid with later readings, such as a Personal Year review.
Which plan includes it
The Lo Shu grid chart, line checks, missing and repeated numbers, frequency table and Kua number are available from the Silver plan (₹991/mo), with a numbers-only PDF.
The Gold plan (₹1,299/mo) adds full written interpretations of every number, over-energy analysis with detailed warnings and a PDF with interpretation text. Remedial guidance for missing numbers is part of these written interpretations on Gold and Platinum.
The Platinum plan (₹1,499/mo) adds a client-ready PDF with interpretation text plus AI Name Correction, AI Tarot Reading and Business Numerology. Every plan includes unlimited saved charts. You can try the Silver tools free for 3 days, with no card needed.
Limits and responsible use
A Lo Shu grid is a traditional reading tool. It does not diagnose health, predict events with certainty or measure ability. Present it as a lens for reflection.
The chart is only as good as the convention behind it. Different schools name the planes differently, and some add the driver and conductor. Know which method you use and be ready to explain it.
Missing numbers are not failings. Avoid language that makes a client feel broken or in danger. Any remedial suggestion should be optional, low-cost and easy to undo. If a client raises a health concern, refer them to a qualified doctor.
Finally, check the output. Lo Shu grid software applies rules consistently, but you should know the method well enough to verify any chart by hand.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Lo Shu grid software plot zeros?
No. Zeros are not plotted, following the convention used across the NumberTeller Learn library. Every non-zero digit of the full date of birth is placed in its box, with repeats shown by repetition.
Can I add the driver and conductor numbers?
Many Indian practitioners add them, and it is a valid variation. It can complete or fill lines that are otherwise missing. Decide on one approach, state it in your reports and apply it to every client.
What is the difference between the golden and silver diagonals?
The app labels the 4-5-6 diagonal "golden", associated with determination and success. It labels the 2-5-8 diagonal "silver", associated with compassion and spirituality and sometimes called the Raj Yog arrow.
How is the Kua number calculated?
It uses the birth year (Chinese solar year) and the traditional male/female formula. See our guide to Kua number calculation for the full method and worked examples.
Is a missing arrow a bad sign?
Not in itself. It shows a theme that the date of birth does not supply directly. Many practitioners read it as an area for conscious development, often with supportive remedial suggestions.
