Numerology Compatibility — Reading Relationship Charts
Multi-factor compatibility using Life Path, Expression and Soul Urge, without over-simplifying the reading.
Compatibility is often the first reading a client asks for, and the one most prone to over-simplification. A quick Life Path comparison gives a headline, but rarely the full picture. This guide shows how to build a multi-factor compatibility reading and deliver it in a way that helps the couple rather than labels them.
Beyond Life Path
Most published compatibility charts compare Life Path numbers only. The Life Path describes each person's broad direction, so it says something about whether two people are moving the same way.
But two people with "compatible" Life Paths can still clash in daily life. Equally, a pair with very different Life Paths may share deep values. A Life Path match alone cannot explain either.
A fuller reading compares at least three numbers:
| Number | What it describes in a relationship |
|---|---|
| Life Path (LP) | Overall direction and life lessons |
| Expression (EX) | How each person acts, speaks and presents |
| Soul Urge (SU) | What each person wants inwardly |
Some practitioners add the Birthday number, the Personality number (consonants) or the Lo Shu grid. Add them if they suit your method, but keep the core three as the backbone.
Remember that the Life Path itself depends on method. This library reduces day, month and year separately before adding. The full-digit method can give a different compound result, so choose one and apply it to both partners. See how to calculate the Life Path number.
Expression and Soul Urge
Expression and Soul Urge add the texture that Life Path lacks.
Expression compatibility shows how two people function together day to day. Matching or harmonious Expression numbers often suggest an easy working rhythm. Contrasting numbers may suggest complementary strengths, or friction over style.
Soul Urge compatibility goes deeper. It reflects what each person needs to feel fulfilled. When Soul Urge numbers harmonise, partners often feel understood even when they disagree on practical matters.
It is also worth checking cross-links. One partner's Expression may match the other's Soul Urge. In practice this is often read as one partner naturally providing what the other inwardly seeks.
Before calculating, use the same vowels for both partners: A, E, I, O and U, with Y counted as a consonant, as NumberTeller does.
Scoring with the harmony scheme
Some practitioners like a score to structure the conversation. This library uses the harmony scheme NumberTeller uses. Other schools publish different friendship tables, so if you follow another table, document it and apply it consistently.
Comparing two numbers
Each pair of numbers is compared by its root. A master number is reduced for this step, so 11/2 counts as 2, 22/4 as 4 and 33/6 as 6. Each comparison gets one of three labels:
| Label | Rule | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Perfect | Same root number | 1.0 |
| Friendly | The two numbers are in each other's friendly group | 0.8 |
| Neutral | Anything else | 0.5 |
The friendly groups
These are the friendly groups NumberTeller uses. Look up either person's number and check whether the other number is in its group; the table is symmetric, so the result is the same either way.
| Number | Friendly group |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 |
| 2 | 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 |
| 3 | 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9 |
| 4 | 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 |
| 5 | 1, 3, 5, 7 |
| 6 | 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 |
| 7 | 1, 4, 5, 7 |
| 8 | 2, 4, 6, 8 |
| 9 | 2, 3, 6, 9 |
The weighting and the score
The three dimensions are weighted:
- Life Path: 40%
- Expression: 30%
- Soul Urge: 30%
Add the weighted values to get a harmony figure between 0.5 and 1.0. Then convert it to a score out of 100:
Score = (weighted harmony − 0.5) × 2 × 100, kept within 0–100.
So three Neutral comparisons give 0, three Friendly comparisons give 60, and three Perfect comparisons give 100.
Worked example
Our two fictional clients are Meghna Dutta, born 7 September 1991, and Manav Nair, born 8 October 1992.
Meghna Dutta
- Life Path: day 7; month 9; year 1991 → 20 → 2. Then 7 + 9 + 2 = 18 → 9.
- Full-digit check: 7+9+1+9+9+1 = 36 → 9. Both methods agree.
- Expression: MEGHNA (M4 E5 G7 H8 N5 A1) = 30 → 3; DUTTA (D4 U3 T2 T2 A1) = 12 → 3. Then 3 + 3 = 6.
- Soul Urge: MEGHNA (E5 A1) = 6; DUTTA (U3 A1) = 4. Then 6 + 4 = 10 → 1.
Manav Nair
- Life Path: day 8; month 10 → 1; year 1992 → 21 → 3. Then 8 + 1 + 3 = 12 → 3.
- Full-digit check: 8+1+0+1+9+9+2 = 30 → 3. Both methods agree.
- Expression: MANAV (M4 A1 N5 A1 V4) = 15 → 6; NAIR (N5 A1 I9 R9) = 24 → 6. Then 6 + 6 = 12 → 3.
- Soul Urge: MANAV (A1 A1) = 2; NAIR (A1 I9) = 10 → 1. Then 2 + 1 = 3.
Scoring
| Dimension | Meghna | Manav | Check | Label | Value | Weight | Weighted |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Life Path | 9 | 3 | 3 is in 9's group (2, 3, 6, 9) | Friendly | 0.8 | 40% | 0.32 |
| Expression | 6 | 3 | 3 is in 6's group (2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9) | Friendly | 0.8 | 30% | 0.24 |
| Soul Urge | 1 | 3 | 3 is in 1's group (1, 2, 3, 5, 7) | Friendly | 0.8 | 30% | 0.24 |
| Total | 0.80 |
Score = (0.80 − 0.5) × 2 × 100 = 60 out of 100.
Cross-link: Meghna's Expression (6) and Manav's Soul Urge (3) also compare as Friendly. One reading is that the way Meghna acts in the world speaks to what Manav inwardly wants.
What the score means
A 60 is not a grade. Every dimension is Friendly, but none is Perfect. The numbers support each other without mirroring each other.
That leaves plenty for the reading. Meghna's Soul Urge 1 is often linked with independence, while Manav's 3 is often linked with expression and sociability. The scheme rates the pair as friendly. Your interpretation explains how those different inner needs can sit together.
Where scoring falls short
A score flattens nuance. Two Friendly numbers can still share a blind spot, and a Neutral pair may complement each other well. Use the score to organise the reading, then let your interpretation take over. For the background to these groups, see our guide to friendly numbers and number harmony.
Business partnerships
The same framework applies to business partners, with a shift of emphasis.
- Expression carries more weight, since it describes working style.
- Life Path shows whether long-term goals align.
- Soul Urge matters less for daily operations, but explains motivation. A partner driven by security will clash with one driven by freedom.
In business, contrasting numbers are often an advantage. A visionary 1 and a methodical 4 may cover each other's blind spots. Read differences as possible complementarity, not as warnings. For company-level analysis and teams of more than two, see business name numerology.
Delivering the reading
How you deliver a compatibility reading shapes how the clients use it.
Avoid "incompatible" verdicts
Never tell a couple they are incompatible. A single word can carry great weight, especially for clients already anxious about a relationship. Numerology describes tendencies; it does not decide whether a relationship should continue.
Use language such as:
- "These numbers flow easily together."
- "This is an area where you will need to understand each other's needs."
- "Your differences here could become a strength if you name them."
Lead with strengths
Open with the areas of harmony. Clients listen more openly to the challenges once they feel the reading is balanced.
Make challenges actionable
For each area of tension, suggest a practical approach. With Meghna and Manav, you might suggest building in both independent time and shared social time.
Key points
- Life Path alone is a starting point, not a full compatibility reading.
- Compare LP, EX and SU, and look for cross-links between partners.
- The harmony scheme labels each dimension Perfect (1.0), Friendly (0.8) or Neutral (0.5).
- Weight LP 40%, EX 30% and SU 30%; score = (weighted harmony − 0.5) × 2 × 100.
- Other schools use different friendship tables; document yours and apply it consistently.
- In business, Expression carries extra weight and differences can be complementary.
- Never deliver an "incompatible" verdict; frame challenges as areas to work on.
Frequently asked questions
Does a score of 0 mean the couple is incompatible?
No. A 0 means all three comparisons are Neutral. The numbers do not echo each other, but they are not in conflict. Read it as a pair with separate strengths.
Should I use birth names or current names?
Many practitioners use the birth name for core numbers and the current name for present-day dynamics. State which you used.
What if one partner has a master number?
For harmony scoring it is compared by its root, so 11/2 counts as 2. Discuss the master number's added intensity separately in the reading.
If you prepare many relationship reports, software such as NumberTeller's compatibility tool and harmony analysis can apply the same calculations and friendly groups to both charts every time. Know the method yourself, so you can check any result. If a name adjustment comes up, see name correction with the Pythagorean method.
